CONVICT
At age 15 Jonathan was arrested 50 miles away from home in Lechlade a market town on the Gloucester/Oxford border. He was charged with removing a trunk belonging to Thomas Morgan from a waggon. He was committed to Gloucester Castle Gaol 7 June 1788. William Hawlings (age 16) was tried for the same offence in July 1788 at Gloucester but was acquitted. Jonathan, however, was sentenced to 7 yrs transprotation. He spent 12 months on the hulk Fortune at Langstone Harbour Portsmouth where he was employed on publice works at Cumberland Fort.
On arrival in NSW he was chosen with 3 other male convicts by Governor Phillip to accompany settlers and the NSW Army Corps to sail to Norfolk Island on the Surprize on 1 Aug 1790
The Terrace property that Robert Potts and Ann Griffiths lived on was chartered to Jonathan in 1813.
